Theo TS Nguyễn Hữu Nguyên, trung tâm Nghiên cứu kinh tế miền Nam, TP.HCM hiện có hơn 10 triệu người dân, với 20 nhóm ngành nghề. Dù khác nhau về thu nhập và nhu cầu hưởng thụ, nhưng họ đều cùng bị ba yếu tố tác động đến chất lượng cuộc sống, gồm: kinh tế suy giảm; môi trường xã hội, ô nhiễm môi trường sống và cơ sở hạ tầng. Tuy nhiên, xét đến cùng, so với nhóm người thu nhập cao và trung bình, thì nhóm người nghèo và nhóm yếu thế bị tác động, tổn thương nhất bởi cả ba yếu tố trên.
Theo đó, hầu như tất cả tiêu cực xã hội đều ảnh hưởng trực tiếp đến đời sống hàng ngày của họ, vì họ không có tiền để “bôi trơn” nên gặp rất nhiều phiền hà khi cần giải quyết vấn đề liên quan đến pháp luật, thủ tục hành chính, giấy tờ, chứng nhận. Cũng vì không có các tiện nghi tốt để khắc phục và thích nghi nên nhóm người này cũng phải chịu ô nhiễm môi trường, khói bụi, tiếng ồn, ngập úng ở tất cả các không gian sống, từ đi lại trên đường phố đến nơi làm việc, cư trú và nghỉ ngơi.
Còn nghiên cứu của nhóm tác giả Nguyễn Thuỵ Diễm Hương, trường đại học Khoa học xã hội và nhân văn TP.HCM cho thấy: đời sống tinh thần và vật chất của người công nhân nhập cư đang ở mức “rất thấp”. 58% công nhân thu nhập từ 2 – 3 triệu đồng; gần 40% thu nhập dưới 2 triệu đồng; trong đó trên 34% chi tiêu ở mức thấp dưới 1 triệu đồng/tháng; trên 40% chi tiêu từ 1 – 2 triệu đồng/tháng. Trên 70% công nhân sống nhà trọ với điều kiện chật hẹp, thiếu ánh sáng, nước sạch… Môi trường làm việc cũng không đảm bảo, với trên dưới 40% phải làm việc trong điều kiện nóng nụi, tiếng ồn, thậm chí nguy hiểm… Đời sống văn hoá công nhân thì “không phim ảnh, sách báo, giải trí, kết bạn…”
