Ở TP. Hồ Chí Minh phát sinh khoảng 1,2 triệu tấn bùn thải/tháng. Dự báo đến năm 2015 số lượng bùn thải, bùn cống rãnh sẽ tăng lên khoảng 3 triệu tấn/tháng, năm 2020 sẽ không dưới 4 triệu tấn/tháng. Trong đó, bùn cống rãnh, bùn thải nguy hại hiện nay có khoảng từ 250 – 300 tấn/ngày, chưa kể đến bùn thải, bùn cống rãnh từ các tỉnh lân cận đưa về thành phố để xử lý từ 150 – 200 tấn/ ngày.
