Đa dạng sinh học được định nghĩa là sự khác nhau giữa các sinh vật sống ở tất cả mọi nơi, bao gồm: các hệ sinh thái trên cạn, sinh thái trong đại dương và các hệ sinh thái thuỷ vực khác, cũng như các phức hệ sinh thái mà các sinh vật là một thành phần trong đó
Mối đe doạ chính đối với đa dạng sinh học là sự tàn phá các hệ sinh thái, làm mất nơi cư trú của các sinh vật. Mất nơi cư trú là nguy cơ hàng đầu làm cho các động vật bị đe doạ và thực vật bị suy thoái dẫn đến sự tuyệt chủng
Sự tàn phá các hệ sinh thái trên diện rộng làm suy thoái đa dạng sinh học đã là điều hiển nhiên, thì sự chia cắt các hệ sinh thái ra từng phần nhỏ cũng tác động không nhỏ đến quá trình làm suy giảm và huỷ diệt các loài
Qua các nghiên cứu sinh học cho thấy đa dạng sinh học đạt được đỉnh cao vào khoảng 30.000 năm trước. Sự đa dạng của các loài bắt đầu giảm dần cùng với sự gia tăng quần thể người
Đa dạng sinh học thực sự là nguồn tài nguyên vô tận về vẻ đẹp, về niềm cảm hứng sáng tạo, về tri thức phong phú của nhân loại, là nguồn gốc của mọi sự thịnh vượng, là nguồn thức ăn, nguyên vật liệu, hàng hoá, thuốc men, dịch vụ sinh thái, là chất liệu di truyền cần thiết cho nông nghiệp, dựơc học và công nghệ. Đa dạng sinh học duy trì các chức năng sinh thái quan trọng: điều hoà các chu trình vật chất và khí hậu, chế độ thuỷ văn trong các vùng rừng đầu nguồn.
Rõ ràng, ĐDSH cần được bảo tồn bằng một loạt các biện pháp nhằm đảm bảo an toàn cho các loài và các kho gen, như xây dựng các khu bảo tồn, những chiến lược tổng thể kết hợp giữa bảo tồn và phát triển, Việt Nam đã có Kế hoạch hành động bảo vệ Đa dạng sinh học, được thủ tướng chính phủ phê duyệt
