Trường tiểu học
Giáo dục tiểu học được xem là nghĩa vụ giáo dục cao nhất và mục đích của trường tiểu học là giáo dục phổ thông tiểu học cơ bản nhất cần thiết trong sinh hoạt của người dân. Và tỷ lệ đi học tiểu học đạt mức hoàn toàn là 99.9%. Đạt được tăng trưởng về lượng như thế này là nhờ cơn sốt giáo dục cao của người dân và chính sách giáo dục của chính phủ. Thông thường, trẻ em Hàn Quốc từ 3-5 tuổi là học mẫu giáo, khỏang từ 5 tuổi là có thể đi học nhưng thông thường thì đến 7 tuổi mới học lớp 1. Thời gian học ở trường tiểu học là 6 năm và đại đa số là trường công lập. Chương trình dạy học của trường công lập và trường dân lập không có sư khác biệt lắm.
Trường trung học cơ sở
Mục đích của trường trung học cơ sở là thực hiện giáo dục trung học cơ sở cao hơn mức giáo dục đã được học ở trường tiểu học. Từ năm 1969, việc tuyển sinh của trường trung học cơ sở đuợc thực hiện theo chế độ không thi tuyển và vì thế nên tất cả học sinh có nguyện vọng học trường trung học cơ sở sẽ được phân vào trường gần với nơi cư trú của các em dựa theo sự bốc thăm của máy vi tính.
Thời gian học ở trường trung học cơ sở là 3 năm và đây cũng là nghĩa vụ giáo dục cao nhất. Tỷ lệ mà trường dân lập chiếm so sánh ở trường tiểu học thì cao nhưng chương trình dạy giữa các trường quốc lập, công lập và dân lập không có sự khác biệt lớn.
