Theo số liệu của Tổng cục Thống kê thì nền kinh tế Việt Nam trong điều kiện đó cũng chỉ tăng trưởng với tốc độ 5,03% trong năm 2012, mức thấp nhất từ năm 2000. Tuy nhiên, hoạt động ngoại thương hàng hóa vẫn được xem là lĩnh vực thành công với trị giá xuất nhập khẩu hàng hóa đạt gần 228,31 tỷ USD, tăng 12,1% so với năm 2011, trong đó xuất khẩu đạt 114,53 tỷ USD, tăng 18,2% (tương đương tăng 17,62 tỷ USD về số tuyệt đối); nhập khẩu đạt 113,78 tỷ USD, tăng 6,6% (tương đương tăng 7,03 tỷ USD). Trong năm 2012, cán cân thương mại hàng hoá cả nước xuất siêu/thặng dư 749 triệu USD (trong khi năm 2011 nhập siêu/thâm hụt 9,84 tỷ USD).
