Đi du học thích nhất là được học. Ý tớ không chỉ là những kiến thức trong sách vở hay những bài giảng các giáo sư diễn thuyết trên bục. Đi du học là chương đầu tiên trong tập sách dài nhiều năm mang tên “Đời”. Ngày xưa ở nhà được bố mẹ chìu chuộng, lo toan từ bữa sáng đến từng bộ quần áo được là ủi phẳng phiu, tớ chỉ phải tập trung vào hai việc: ăn cho lớn và học cho giỏi. Vào đại học, chặng đường khó khăn chỉ mới bắt đầu.
Đi du học là bước đầu tiên để tớ rèn luyện bản thân thành một con người có bản lĩnh và sự tự lập. Đã là đi du học, tớ tự nhủ đây là cơ hội tốt để tiếp cận văn hoá và lối sống của phương Tây. Nhìn bên ngoài trông tớ khá lạc quẻ vì cứ là “bé nấm lùn” đứng giữa những cô cậu bạn cao lêu khêu. Vì thế mà kỉ niệm vui nhiều kể không xiết. Có lần trời mưa mà chỉ có độc một cây dù. Thế là tớ được anh bạn Mỹ cao to cõng lên vai để cầm dù che cho cả hai. Cuối cùng hai đứa tới nơi mà không ai ướt cả! Ai bảo nhỏ con không có lợi chứ? Cứ mạnh dạn kết bạn, được một lúc là quen cả bạn Tàu, bạn Hàn, bạn Ấn, bạn Mỹ. Mỗi người một vẻ, vừa chơi mà lại vừa học hỏi lẫn nhau!
Đi du học còn là học cách hoà nhập với cộng đồng. Với ngành Chính trị học để học lên Luật, ngoài những giờ học chính quy, tớ còn tham gia Phi Alpha Delta Pre-law fraternity để nới rộng các mối quan hệ với các luật sư ở phía Bắc Cali và cũng góp phần giúp đỡ cộng đồng. Ví dụ như mỗi học kì, chúng tớ sẽ tổ chức một buổi Tư Vấn Luật Pháp Miễn Phí (Free Legal Clinic) cho những người dân với thu nhập trung bình-thấp để tạo điều kiện cho họ được giải đáp những thắc mắc hay vướng mắc từ các luật sư có thâm niên trong vùng. Theo tớ, ngoài việc học theo sách vở, tham gia các hoạt động xã hội là cách tốt nhất để trau dồi kinh nghiệm và kiến thức thực tế. Ngoài ra, những hoạt động này còn rất vui và ý nghĩa nữa!
Đi du học còn là đi khám phá thế giới. Cuối tuần dù bận thế nào, tớ cũng dành ra ít nhất một buổi để tìm tòi những thắng cảnh xung quanh. Đã tiện mua hẳn vé máy bay sang nước khác, thì phải tận dụng cả thời cơ đi du lịch chứ! Tớ hay bắt tàu xuống San Francisco với cái camera trên tay, lúi húi chụp cảnh những phiên chợ cuối tuần hay đơn giản là đường phố tấp nập luôn bận rộn của một trong những thành phố phồn thịnh nhất nước Mỹ và trên thế giới. Lúc khác tớ lại đi cắm trại hay leo núi để tìm về thiên nhiên. Và tất nhiên, ngắm bình minh hay hoàng hôn trên biển cũng tuyệt đẹp.
Có các bạn hỏi tớ làm thế nào có thể sắp xếp được thời gian để làm được tần ấy việc trong khi chỉ mỗi học thôi đã chạy không kịp. Ừ thì tớ bảo: “Do đi du học đấy!”. Khi không thể dựa dẫm vào bố mẹ hay người thân, chính chúng tớ phải tự thân vận động và “trổ” hết công sức để tận dụng tối đa cái tuổi trẻ còn dẻo dai, còn năng động để sau này không hối tiếc. Thời gian mỗi ngày đều như nhau cho mỗi người. Thế nên chính việc đi du học đã dạy cho tớ cách quản lý thời gian sao cho hiệu quả nhất, nhằm rèn luyện bản thân theo kỉ luật và cũng là một cách chuẩn bị ra đời sau này.
Nhiều người bảo đi du học khố lắm, nhưng tớ lại thấy sướng ghê. Đâu phải chỉ mỗi việc học, đi du học là một trải nghiệm để nhìn thế giới bằng một tầm nhìn mới. Đã có điều kiện được thăm thú thế giới và học hỏi kiến thức từ các nước tiên tiến, tớ nghĩ giới du học sinh bọn tớ có nhiệm vụ thoát hẳn ra lối sống tự ti để hoà nhập với thế giới, chứng minh rằng Việt Nam sẽ sớm sánh bằng với các nước bạn và cũng chẳng thua kém ai đâu về cả khoản trí tuệ lẫn độ “chịu chơi”. Học hết sức, nhưng cũng chơi hết mình!
