Cộng đồng Hoa kiều ở miền Bắc Việt Nam nhỏ hơn nhiều so với miền Nam, miền Nam Việt Nam lại là điểm đến mà nhiều người Hoa lựa chọn để tái định cư suốt thời kỳ Pháp thuộc. Những biến đổi chính trị và xã hội về sau cũng góp phần vào sự dao động về quy mô dân cư giữa hai cộng đồng. Khi Chiến tranh Đông Dương lần I nổ ra vào năm 1946, một bộ phận người Hoa rời miền Bắc tới miền Nam Việt Nam, số khác quay trở về Trung Quốc.Năm 1954 khi Việt Nam bị chia cắt, gần 60.000 người Hoa di cư từ Bắc vào Nam.Đồng thời trong khoảng thời gian đó, những nhà Cộng sản Trung Quốc cũng chuyển từ Nam ra Bắc, nhưng với số lượng nhỏ.
