Tại vùng biển và thềm lục địa Việt Nam, nhiều bể trầm tích có triển vọng dầu khí đã được xác định, trong đó các bể trầm tích Cửu Long và Nam Côn Sơn được đánh giá có triển vọng dầu khí lớn nhất, điều kiện khai thác tương đối thuận lợi. Tổng trữ lượng dự báo địa chất về dầu khí của toàn thềm lục địa Việt Nam đạt xấp xỉ 10 tỷ tấn dầu quy đổi, trữ lượng khai thác khoảng 2 tỷ tấn và trữ lượng dự báo của khí khoảng 1.000 tỷ mét khối.
