Tổ chức Tiêu chuẩn hóa quốc tế (ISO - International Organization for Standardization) được thành lập từ năm 1947, có trụ sở đặt tại Geneva - Thụy Sĩ. ISO là một hội đoàn toàn cầu của hơn 150 các các cơ quan tiêu chuẩn quốc gia (mỗi thành viên của ISO là đại diện cho mỗi quốc gia của mình), Tổng cục Tiêu chuẩn Đo lường Chất lượng là thành viên chính thức của ISO từ năm 1977 .

Tổ chức ISO chịu trách nhiệm ban hành các tiêu chuẩn quốc tế (ISO) khuyến nghị áp dụng nhằm thuận lợi hóa thương mại tòan cầu và bảo vệ an toàn, sức khỏe và môi trường cho cộng đồng. Hiện nay, ISO với gần 3000 tổ chức kỹ thuật với hệ thống các Ban Kỹ thuật (TC-Technical committee); Tiểu ban kỹ thuật (STC); Nhóm công tác (WG) và Nhóm đặc trách có nhiệm vụ soạn thảo các tiêu chuẩn quốc tế. Tiêu chuẩn quốc tế ISO được ban hành sau khi được thông qua theo nguyên tắc đa số đồng thuận của các thành viên chính thức của ISO.

Hiện nay ISO đã soạn thảo và ban hành gần 16.000 tiêu chuẩn cho sản phẩm, dịch vụ, hệ thống quản lý, thuật ngữ, phương pháp…Bộ tiêu chuẩn ISO 9000 lần đầu tiên vào năm 1987. Sau lần soát xét đầu tiên vào năm 1994, bộ tiêu chuẩn này bao gồm 24 tiêu chuẩn với 3 mô hình đảm bảo chất lượng cơ bản (ISO9001, ISO 9002 và ISO 9003) và một số tiêu chuẩn hướng dẫn; lần soát xét thứ hai vào năm 2000, bộ tiêu chuẩn ISO 9000 :2000 được hợp nhất và chuyển đổi còn lại 4 tiêu chuẩn chính sau :

ISO 9000:2007, Hệ thống quản lý chất lượng - Cơ sở và từ vựng;

ISO 9001:2008, Hệ thống quản lý chất lượng - Các yêu cầu;

ISO 9004:2000, Hệ thống quản lý chất lượng - Hướng dẫn cải tiến;

ISO 19011: 2002, Hướng dẫn đánh giá các hệ thống quản lý chất lượng và môi trường;

After the first review in 1994, standard set consists of 24 standard with 3 models to ensure basic quality (ISO9001, ISO 9002 and ISO 9003) and some standard guidelines; Once the second review in 2000, the ISO 9000: 2000 are merged and change left 4 main criteria:

ISO 9000: 2008, quality management systems-basis and vocabulary;

ISO 9001: 2008, quality management systems – requirements ISO 9004: 2000

ISO 19011: 2002, guidelines for the assessment of quality management systems and the environment;
