Theo thống kê của Hiệp hội Thép (VSA), ngành thép đang có khoảng 400 DN tham gia hoạt động sản xuất thép các loại. Cho tới nay, với năng lực sản xuất của các nhà máy trong nước, chúng ta đã có thể đáp ứng được 100% nhu cầu thép thanh, thép cuộn phi 6- phi 8 mmm, thép hình cỡ nhỏ, 100% ống thép hàn, thép mạ kim loại, thép phủ mầu và cuộn thép cán nguội để làm nguyên liệu cho các nhà máy mạ kim loại và phủ mầu hiện có ở Việt Nam. Tuy nhiên các chủng loại thép khác như thép cuộn cán nóng, thép hợp kim, thép chế tạo cơ khí, thép tấm cán nóng, thép tấm cán nguội... còn phải nhập khẩu. Năm 2012, Việt Nam nhập khẩu 7.6 triệu tấn thép các loại và nguyên liệu thép.
