Trong chiến tranh thế giới lần thứ 2, Việt Nam bị quân Nhật chiếm đóng nhưng sau đó là chế độ thực dân Pháp, Việt Nam tuyên bố độc lập vào 2/9/1945, nhưng ngay sau đó lại lao vào cuộc chiến tranh chống âm mưu của Pháp nhằm biến Việt nam trở lại thuộc địa của chúng. Cuộc chiến tranh này kéo dài them 9 năm nữa. Chiến tranh kết thúc vào năm 1954, đất nước bị chia làm hai miền tại vĩ tuyến 17. Miền Bắc trở thành nước Công hòa Dân chủ Việt Nam, dưới sự lãnh đạo của Đảng Cộng Sản. Trong khi đó miền Nam chịu sự ảnh hưởng của phương Tây , mà chủ yếu là Mỹ.
