III. Đối chiếu thành ngữ Anh-Việt về ngữ nghĩa



*Giống nhau:
Tiếng Việt ta có những thành ngữ sau:
Nhát như thỏ đế
Tiêu tiền như nước
Nhanh như chớp
Cũng tương tự như vậy trong Tiếng Anh cũng có:

As timid as a rabbit
To spend money like water
As quick as flash

Như vậy, về nội dung cả tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt đều mang ý nghĩa chung, đều để so sánh cái này với cái kia thông qua hình ảnh, hoạt động của động vật.



* Khác nhau

Có sự khác nhau trong cách dùng từ giữa tiếng Việt và tiếng Anh đó là sự khác nhau về văn hóa của hai dân tộc. Một bên là phương Đông có nền văn hóa nông nghiệp, một bên là phương Tây có nền văn hóa du mục. Cho nên cùng một sự việc mỗi ngôn ngữ có sự diễn đạt khác nhau như trong các thành ngữ so sánh :
Trong tiếng Việt có các thành ngữ so sánh sau:
Giống nhau như đúc
Rối như tơ vò
Thẳng như ruột ngựa
Hiền như nai con
Thánh thiện như thiên thần
Xấu như ma lem…

Trong tiếng Anh cùng một ẩn ý như trên nhưng đối tượng so sánh lại khác nhau.
Giống nhau như hai hạt đậu.
(Like as two peas)
Mù như dơi
(As blind as a bat )
Thẳng như mũi tên
(As straight as an arrow)
Hiền như cừu non
(As gentle as a lamb)
Thánh thiện như chim bồ câu.
(As gentle as a dove)
Xấu như đười ươi

(As ugly as an ape)

Rõ ràng đối tượng so sánh ở đây có sự khác nhau rõ rêt:
Đối tượng so sánh trong hai thành ngữ dựa rất nhiều vào văn hóa của hai nước.Các con vật trong hai thành ngữ là những con vật quen thuộc của hai nước. Ở Việt nam hay dùng những con vật quen thuộc, hay được nuôi trong nhà như chó, mèo, chim, kiến…. Nhưng trong tiếng Anh lại hay dùng ngựa, cừu,… những con vật gắn với việc đi săn bắt, liên quan tới du mục.

Ngoài ra, có một số thành ngữ đặc biệt. Nhìn về mặt hình thức có thể suy ra tiếng Việt nhưng thực chất chúng lại mang một nghĩa hoàn toàn ngược lại.
