“Mời” là một hiện thực ngôn ngữ trong mọi nền văn hoá. “Mời” thể hiện mối quan tâm chia sẻ với người khác, giúp cũng cố mối quan hệ và làm cho cuộc sống thêm đa dạng và phong phú. Tuy nhiên, cung cách mời bị chi phối bởi niềm tin, phong tục của nền văn hoá, trạng thái tâm lý của người đưa ra lời mời và mối quan hệ giữa những người tham gia cuộc thoại. Trên cơ sở lý thuyết lịch sự của Brown và Levinson [2] và thuyết hành vi ngôn ngữ của Austin [1], bài này khảo sát LMTT trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt. Từ cái nhìn sosánh, đối chiếu, bài viết nêu ra một số điểm giống nhau và khác biệt giữa LMTT trong hai ngôn ngữ, trong đó sự khác biệt chiếm ưu thế
