Hệ thống nhu cầu do Abraham Maslow xây dựng nên là một trong những mô hình được sử dụng rộng rãi nhất trong nghiên cứu về động cơ cá nhân. Nhu cầu của cá nhân rất phong phú và đa dạng, do vậy để đáp ứng được nhu cầu đó cũng rất phức tạp. Để làm được điều này Maslow đã chỉ ra rằng người quản lý cần phải có các biện pháp tìm ra và thoả mãn nhu cầu người lao động, khi đó sẽ tạo ra được động lực cho người lao động và ông nhấn mạnh rằng trong mỗi con người bao giờ cũng tồn tại một hệ thống phức tạp gồm 5 nhóm nhu cầu (hình ).
