Homestay là loại hình du lịch đang bước đầu phát triển tại Việt Nam, tập trung nhiều nhất ở khu vực Tây Bắc và Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long. Trên thực tế homestay ở Việt Nam được khởi nguồn từ nhu cầu của những khách nước ngoài và loại hình du lịch này xuất phát từ tính tự phát của chủ hộ. Vì vậy, mặc dù đây là hoạt động du lịch có tiềm năng nhưng hiệu quả khai thác còn rất thấp và việc phát triển loại hình du lịch này còn gặp nhiều khó khăn.
