Lý thuyết độ tin cậy cũng đã được ứng dụng vào lĩnh vực tính toán công trình thủy từ những năm thập kỷ 90 của thế kỷ XX. Các thiết kế ngẫu nhiên và các thiết kế rủi ro được phát triển khá mạnh mẽ trong lĩnh vực công trình biển và công trình bảo vệ bờ.
Ở nước ta, lý thuyết độ tin cậy cũng đã được xâm nhập vào từ những năm 60, từ đó đến nay nó không ngừng được phát triển. Đầu tiên là sự truyền bá lý thuyết bằng những sách dịch, bài giảng, giáo trình giảng dạy trong các trường đại học, tiếp đến là các công trình nghiên cứu trong khuôn khổ các luận văn thạc sĩ, luận án tiến sĩ trong các ngành Giao thông, Kết cấu xây dựng, Công trình thủy, Đê và công trình bảo vệ bờ…Trong lĩnh vực kết cấu xây dựng đã có những quy định ban đầu về tính độ tin cậy kết cấu. So với thế giới ứng dụng lý thuyết này trong lĩnh vực công trình xây dựng của Việt nam đang còn là mới mẻ.
