Chiều sâu của lỗ không nên vượt quá 3 lần đường kính, nếu lỗ có đường kính nhỏ hơn 5 mm (xấp xỉ 3/16 inch) thì chiều sâu lỗ nên nên bằng hai lần đường kính, bề dày phần dưới của lỗ nên bằng 0.2 lần đường kính lỗ để loại trừ khuyết tật cho mặt đối diện.
Một thiết kế tốt là bề dày của thành lỗ luôn đồng đều và không có các góc sắc cạnh nơi mà tập trung của ứng xuất.
