Vào đầu thập niên 1990, hai Giáo sư Tiến sĩ Kaplan & Norton của trường Đại học Harvard là những người đầu tiên phát triển hệ thống Balanced scorecard. Hai giáo sư đã phát hiện một vấn đề khá nghiêm trọng là rất nhiều công ty có khuynh hướng quản lý doanh nghiệp chỉ dựa đơn thuần vào chỉ số tài chính. Điều này là phù hợp trong quá khứ, nhưng trong thế giới kinh doanh hiện nay đòi hỏi doanh nghiệp phải quản lý dựa trên một bộ các chỉ số đo tốt hơn và hoàn thiện hơn.

Chỉ số đo tài chính là cần thiết, nhưng chỉ số này chỉ cho chúng ta biết điều đã xảy ra trong quá khứ, nơi mà hoạt động kinh doanh đã xảy ra. In the early 1990s, two professors Dr. Kaplan & Norton of Harvard University was the first to develop Balanced scorecard system. Two professors have discovered a fairly serious problem is that a lot of companies tend to only business management based merely on financial indicators. This is appropriate in the past, but in the business world today requires enterprises to manage based on a set of indicators to better measure and improve.Financial indicators is needed, but this index only tells us what happened in the past, where business activity has occurred. Non-financial indicators for we know matter what happens in the front and in the future will the business activity. This shows that we are operating the same business as we are driving a car just by looking into the mirror!
