Nằm ở cụm núi ranh giới giữa hai huyện Quế Sơn và Duy Xuyên, nơi đây đã từng là căn cứ địa vững chắc của phong trào chống ngoại xâm. Trong những năm chống Mỹ vùng căn cứ Hòn Tàu - Mặt Rạng là một trong những nơi đóng quân của các cơ quan Khu - Tỉnh Ủy của Quảng Nam và đặc khu Quảng Đà.
Có thể nói Hòn Tàu là “tỉnh lỵ kháng chiến” của quân và dân Quảng Đà. Tại đây, Đặc khu ủy Quảng Đà đã hoàn thành xuất sắc sứ mệnh lịch sử của mình ở chặng cuối cuộc kháng chiến chống Mỹ.

Hòn Tàu là một dãy núi giáp ranh giữa các huyện Duy Xuyên, Nông Sơn và Quế Sơn, diện tích gần 100 km², có nhiều núi hiểm trở, như Nhà Muỗi, Cù Hang, Mặt Rạng; nhiều hang động chứa lượng người lớn, làm nơi sinh hoạt, hội họp. Với vị trí chiến lược đó, Hòn Tàu đã được Đặc Khu ủy Quảng Đà chọn làm căn cứ cách mạng trong 7 năm cuối cuộc chiến chống Mỹ.
