Như vây, " phong hóa" trở thành một thuật ngữ khoa học chứ không còn có nghĩa hẹp của Hán- Việt nữa. Dựa trên các yếu tố tác động và phương thức biến đổi khác nhau của đá gốc mà chia phong hóa ra 3 loại: phong hóa vật lý, phong hóa hóa học và phong hóa sinh học
