Ngày nay, tiếng Anh là thứ tiếng thông dụng được sử dụng rộng rãi nhất trên thế giới. Đó là ngôn ngữ của khoa học kỹ thuật, công nghệ, thương mại và thông tin trên toàn cầu. Tiếng Anh đã trở thành môn học bắt buộc trong hầu hết các trường học ở Việt Nam, đặc biệt là trong trường đại học. Trên thực tế, trong quá trình học tiếng Anh, sinh viên gặp phải rất nhiều khó khăn và khó khăn phổ biến nhất là những khó khăn trong quá trình học kỹ năng đọc. Có ba nguyên nhân dẫn đến những khó khăn trong quá trình học kỹ năng nghe là: thiếu vốn từ vựng, phát âm không chính xác, không biết cấu trúc câu. Đặc biệt là từ vựng, từ vựng đóng vai trò vô cùng quan trọng trong quá trình học ngoại ngữ. Theo Wilkins (1972), nếu người học không học ngữ pháp thì họ chỉ có thể truyền đạt được rất ít ý tưởng của mình. Nhưng nếu họ không có vốn từ vựng nhất định, họ hoàn toàn không thể diễn tả được điều gì trong giao tiếp. Như vậy, từ vựng là công cụ giúp người học có thể tiến hành giao tiếp thành công. Ngoài ra, từ vựng là nền tảng để phát triển các kỹ năng ngôn ngữ khác như: đọc hiểu, nghe hiểu, nói, viết...Nhận thức được tầm quan trọng của từ vựng trong phát triển kỹ năng nghe thì tôi đặt ra một đề tài để tìm hiểu và giải quyết vấn đề đó là “khó khăn…………………”.
