Tiếng Anh hiện đại được cho là xuất hiện từ thế kỉ XVI.Tiếng Anh thời này tuy có cải tiến khá nhiều, nhưng vẫn chưa giống hẳn tiếng Anh chúng ta đang dùng hiện nay. Tuy nhiên, trong suốt hơn 1 thế kỉ sau đó, ngôn ngữ được giản lược bớt, cùng với việc phát triển in ấn, giúp cho ngôn ngữ được chuẩn hóa hơn.
