Sinh viên châu Á nói chung và cụ thể là sinh viên Việt Nam thường không theo kịp chương trình học ở nước ngoài trong thời gian đầu. Nguyên nhân chính là do phương pháp học tập không phù hợp. Học đại học ở những nước như Mỹ, Anh, hay Úc đòi hỏi tính độc lập cao, điều này hiện còn thiếu và yếu đối với sinh viên Việt đặc biệt khi học tập ở nước ngoài. Nhiều bạn không có thói quen tự học, không để ý tích lũy thông tin xã hội từ các nguồn sách tham khảo, internet để phục vụ quá trình học tập và nghiên cứu của mình. Điều này dẫn đến những khó khăn cho chính các bạn khi du học vì hầu như sinh viên không được thầy cô giáo “ốp”, lại không có gia đình bên cạnh để nhắc nhở, nên các bạn phải chủ động đọc sách, mầy mò tài liệu tham khảo… để có được kiến thức cho riêng mình.

Cũng cần phải nói đến sự khác nhau trong cách làm bài thi, chấm điểm, và đánh giá ở nước ngoài so với Việt Nam. Nếu như ở Việt Nam, bài văn cuối kỳ của bạn nhiều khi sẽ được đạt điểm cao vì thể hiện sự “thuộc bài” thì ở nước ngoài, sinh viên được đánh giá rất cao khi đưa ra được những tư duy sáng tạo và quan điểm mới của riêng mình. Nếu không quen với những điều này, sinh viên Việt Nam rất dễ bị sốc và ảnh hưởng đến kết quả học tập của bản thân.
