“Sinh viên tốt nghiệp loại giỏi vẫn chưa có việc làm”, “sinh viên tốt nghiệp đại học đi đâu, về đâu?”, “thạc sĩ giỏi đi làm phụ hồ”… Những từ này được dùng để mô tả cho vấn đề nóng đang được sinh viên, nhà trường và xã hội trăn trở, quan tâm – vấn đề việc làm của sinh viên. Trong thời kỳ bao cấp, tỷ lệ học Đại Học, Cao Đẳng…số lượng sinh viên còn rất ít và những sinh viên ra trường là những người có năng lực thực sự nên tình trạng thất nghiệp hầu như không có.Tuy nhiên, trong thời kỳ kinh tế thị trường mở cửa hiện nay, các trường đại học, cao đẳng, đào tạo nghề mọc lên ngày càng nhiều, đào tạo tràn lan kém chất lượng, không phù hợp với nhu cầu lao động hiện tại đã dẫn đến tình trạng “ thừa thầy, thiếu thợ”.
Học Đại Học – Cao Đẳng được xem là lựa chọn ưu tiên hàng đầu của các bậc phụ huynh muốn con em mình hướng đến, là con đường mang đến thành công cho con em. Nhưng hiện nay, trước tình trạng nhiều sinh viên sau 4 – 5 năm bỏ công sức, tiền bạc và thời gian học lại thất nghiệp hay không có công việc thích hợp với khả năng, sở thích của các em. Hầu hết sinh viên đã tốt nghiệp hay các em vẫn còn ngồi trên ghế nhà trường đều mơ ước có một việc làm đúng với ngành nghề đào tạo đáp ứng đúng niềm đam mê, sở thích góp phần khẳng định bản thân, tạo thu nhập cho cuộc sống hàng ngày. Tuy nhiên, trên thực tế, việc các sinh viên ra trường không có việc làm, làm trái ngành đã trở thành một việc quá quen thuộc đối với tình trạng việc làm của sinh viên Việt Nam hiện nay.
