Lịch sử hình thành và phát triển - Tổng công ty xăng dầu Việt Nam (petrolimex) tiền thân là tổng công ty xăng dầu mỡ được thành lập theo Nghị định số 09/BTN ngày 12/01/1956 của Bộ thương nghiệp và được thành lập lại theo Quyết định số 224/TTg ngày 17/04/1995 của thủ tướng chính phủ. - Trải qua hơn 53 năm hình thành và phát triển, đến nay Petrolimex đã trở thành một trong số những doanh nghiệp trọng trách hàng đầu của Việt Nam với 41 Công ty Xăng dầu thành viên, 23 công ty cổ phần, 3 liên doanh với nước ngoài và 1 Chi nhánh tại Singapore, tổng doanh thu toàn Tổng công ty hơn 120.000 tỷ đồng. - Petrolimex luôn phát huy vai trò chủ lực, chủ đạo bình ổn và phát triển thị trường xăng dầu, các sản phẩm hoá dầu đáp ứng nhu cầu tiêu dùng của nhân dân, phục vụ sự nghiệp phát triển kinh tế của đất nước và bảo đảm an ninh quốc phòng. - Chiếm 60% thị phần xăng dầu cả nước. - Giai đoạn phát triển: Ÿ Giai đoạn 1956 - 1975: với nhiệm vụ đảm bảo nhu cầu xăng dầu cho sự nghiệp khôi phục, phát triển kinh tế để xây dựng CNXH và chống chiến tranh phá hoại của đế quốc Mỹ ở miền Bắc; Cung cấp đầy đủ, kịp thời xăng dầu cho cuộc đấu tranh giải phóng miền Nam thống nhất Tổ quốc.
