Bài báo giới thiệu vai trò của Toán học trong thực tiễn cuộc sống, yêu cầu đổi mới nội dung dạy học theo hướng phát triển năng lực học sinh. Trên cơ sở những luận điểm rút ra từ các nghiên cứu của OECD, PISA và thực tế giảng dạy ở trường THCS & THPT Nguyễn Tất Thành, bài báo đã chỉ ra những nội dung dạy học gắn với thực tiễn, đưa ra hệ thống bài tập khuyến nghị, và đề xuất thang đo đánh giá năng lực học sinh
