4. Đại hội đồng Liên hiệp quốc ngày 13.10 đã chính thức phê chuẩn đề cử của Hội đồng Bảo an, chọn cựu Thủ tướng Bồ Đào Nha Antonio Guterres làm Tổng thư ký LHQ, thay cho ông Ban Ki-moon sẽ mãn nhiệm vào cuối năm nay.

Chủ tịch Đại hội đồng LHQ Peter Thompson đã đọc quyết định của ĐHĐ phê chuẩn đề cử của HĐBA theo hình thức đồng thuận, không cần thông qua bỏ phiếu tín nhiệm. Phát biểu sau cuộc họp của Đại hội đồng, ông Antonio Guterres đã bày tỏ cam kết sẽ phụng sự tất cả các quốc gia thành viên LHQ bằng thái độ công tâm, dựa trên những nguyên tắc đã được nêu rõ trong Hiến chương LHQ. Tân TTK LHQ Guterres cũng nhấn mạnh đã tới lúc các quốc gia cần phải vượt qua những khác biệt xung quanh cách thức chấm dứt cuộc chiến Syria. Ông Guterres, 67 tuổi, sẽ trở thành Tổng thư ký thứ 9 của LHQ với nhiệm kỳ từ ngày 1/1/2017 đến ngày 31/12/2022.
