Tỉ lệ người già/dân số Việt Nam từ 6.9% vào năm 1979, vọt lên 7.2% vào năm 1989, rồi thành 8.1%vào năm 1999, đến năm 2009 là 9% và giờ đã vượt qua mức 10.5%. Trong vòng 50 năm nữa Việt Nam sẽ có thêm hơn 10 triệu người già.

Đó là tính toán của Việt Nam còn theo một nghiên cứu của Tổ Chức Thương Mại Thế Giới (WTO) thì trong 15 năm nữa, tỉ lệ người trên 65 tuổi ở Việt Nam sẽ tăng từ 7% đến 14%.
