Cũng trong vấn đề phân tích kết quả, cần phải đề cập đến độ tin cậy của dữ kiện trong quần thể (population data). Thí dụ FBI đã xây dựng được một hệ dữ liệu thống kê quần thể tham khảo cho các sắc dân da trắng, đen, da màu và dân Á châu. Vấn đề là ngay trong mỗi nhóm sắc dân đó cũng có sự biến đổi (chẳng hạn Á châu thì gồm Đông Á, Tây Á, Nam, Đông Nam Á v.v..) Trong khi đó xác suất để có thể khớp được một mẫu DNA với một mẫu trong quần thể tham khảo là rất thấp (một phần 6 triệu!), do đó xác suất này có thể cao hơn nếu dùng phụ nhóm của quần thể tham khảo (có thể tăng lên 1/800000).
