Các vi sinh vật hiếu khí đó tồn tại và phát triển nhờ hệ thống cung cấp và phân tán khí oxy được lắp đặt ở đáy bể. Nước thải và không khí được hòa trộn theo nguyên tắc ngược chiều; không khí có chứa oxy được thổi từ dưới lên, nước thải được đưa từ trên xuống, qua lớp đệm nước thải được dàn đều trên bề mặt và tiếp xúc với oxy.
