Sự gia tăng dân số quá nhanh đã tạo nên sức ép rất lớn đối với sự phát triển kinh tế xã hội của đất nước , với việc bảo vệ nguồn tài nguyên thiên nhiên và việc nâng cao chất lượng cuộc sống của từng thành viên trong xã hội.
Hiện nay, do ngày càng nhận thức được ảnh hưởng của dân số đến sự phát triển của đất nước cũng như hạnh phúc gia đình , ngày càng nhiều người tích cực tham gia thực hiện kế hoạch hoá gia đình . Người ta hi vọng có thể giảm tỉ lệ tăng dân số hàng năm xuống còn 1%
Dân số việt nam phân bố không đồng đều , khoảng 75% dân số tập trung ở vùng đồng bằng và ven biển với mật độ dân số rất cao (đồng bằng sông hồng 1220 người/km2-2006) . Ở trung du miền núi, dân cư thưa thớt (tây nguyên là 89 người/km2,tây bắc là 69 người /km2-2006)
Trong số 54 nhóm dân tộc, người Kinh chiếm tới 86,2% tổng dân số . Số còn lại là các dân tộc thiểu số sống dải rác trên lãnh thổ việt nam . Khoảng 60% dân số việt nam sống bằng nghề nông và khoảng 1/2 dân số dưới 25 tuổi . Hàng năm lực dân số việt nam
