Sông Cu Đê có các hướng chính là sông Bắc và sông Nam bắt nguồn từ dãy núi Trường Sơn, hợp thành sông Cu Đê tại xã Hòa Bắc, huyện Hòa Vang. Sông chảy theo hướng Tây-Đông, qua huyện Hòa Vang và quận Liên Chiểu, rồi đổ ra biển Đông.
Với chiều dài của sông tính từ xã Hòa Bắc tới biển là 38 km, trong đó tới hơn 30 km tại địa phận Hòa An.
Sông Cu Đê còn gọi sông Trường Định và thượng nguồn sông ở xã Hòa Bắc huyện Hòa Vang, hạ nguồn là cửa biển Nam Ô, phường Hòa Hiệp Bắc, quận Liên Chiểu.
Nếu di chuyển bằng xe máy, xe ô tô thì đi dọc theo tuyến đường từ nội thành lên xã Hòa Bắc để ngắm nhìn dòng sông từ trên cao độ 7-10m.
