Luật sư là người hành nghề liên quan đến lĩnh vực pháp luật khi có đủ tiêu chuẩn, điều kiện hành nghề theo quy định của pháp luật của mỗi quốc gia. Luật sư thực hiện dịch vụ pháp lý theo yêu cầu của cá nhân, cơ quan, tổ chức (gọi chung là khách hàng). Luật sư cung cấp các dịch vụ pháp lý như: tư vấn pháp luật, soạn thảo văn bản, tổ chức đàm phán, thương lượng về các vấn đề pháp luật, và có thể đại diện cho thân chủ hoặc bảo vệ quyền lợi của thân chủ trước tòa án trong quá trình tiến hành tố tụng.

Sách báo tiếng Việt đầu thế kỷ 20 còn dùng danh từ thày kiện như đồng nghĩa với luật sư.
