Theo Tổ chức Y tế thế giới (WHO), hàng ngày trên thế giới có khoảng 250 triệu phụ nữ và gần 1 tỷ nam giới hút thuốc lá, tức là tỉ lệ hút thuốc lá ở nam giới nhiều gấp hơn 4 lần so với nữ giới (48% so với 12%), và đặc biệt, tỉ lệ hút thuốc lá ở nữ giới ngày càng gia tăng, dự báo có thể tăng lên đến 20% vào năm 2025(1,5,8,9,11,13,15,19). Ở Việt nam, theo điều tra năm 1997, tỉ lệ hút thuốc lá ở nam giới là 50% và nữ giới là 3,4%(4). Khói thuốc lá chứa nhiều chất độc hại (khoảng 4.000 chất) và là yếu tố thuận lợi gây nên nhiều bệnh lý nguy hiểm cho bản thân người phụ nữ như ung thư (thường gặp nhất là ung thư phổi), bệnh lý hô hấp (viêm phế quản mãn tính, hen phế quản,…), bệnh lý tim mạch, bất thường về sức khỏe sinh sản và tình trạng rối loạn tâm thần…(2,4-7,10,12,14,18,19). Số tỉ lệ tử vong ở phụ nữ hít phải khói thuốc lá ngày càng gia tăng; chẳng hạn, ở Châu Âu, con số tử vong này là 10.000 vào năm 1955, tăng lên 113.000 vào năm 1995(9); và ở trên toàn thế giới vào năm 2000, khoảng 990.000 phụ nữ tử vong do các bệnh lý liên quan đến hút thuốc lá(11,13,21).
