Ngày của Mẹ đương thời được khởi xướng bởi bà Anna Marie Jarvis tại thành phố Grafton, tiểu bang Tây Virginia, Hoa Kỳ, để tôn vinh những người mẹ hiền, đặc biệt là trong khung cảnh của mái ấm gia đình.
