Sân bay Lũng Cò nay thuộc thôn Đồng Đon, xã Minh Thanh, huyện Sơn Dương. Địa điểm sân bay cách khu di tích Tân Trào khoảng 8km về hướng Tây Bắc và cách trụ sở UBND xã Minh Thanh khoảng 500m về hướng Bắc. Sân bay có chiều dài 400m và chiều rộng 20 m; nằm trong một thung lũng hẹp, bốn xung quanh được bao bọc bởi các ngọn núi và những quả đồi thấp cây cối um tùm. Đây là vị trí thuận lợi nhất quanh khu vực Tân Trào lúc bấy giờ để xây dựng một sân bay dã chiến tiếp nhận máy bay trở hàng viện trợ của quân Đồng Minh.

Tháng 6/1945, trước yêu cầu tăng cường hợp tác giữa Mặt trận Việt Minh và quân Đồng Minh, Bác Hồ chỉ đạo đồng chí Đàm Quang Trung và Lê Giản chọn địa điểm và lập kế hoạch xây dựng sân bay; phối hợp với tổ công tác có một thiếu tá thuộc lực lượng Cứu trợ không quân Mỹ. Hai đồng chí xem xét địa thế và chọn Lũng Cò, xã Minh Thanh làm địa điểm xây dựng sân bay. Bắt tay vào công việc, những đồng chí được giao nhiệm vụ xây dựng sân bay đã vận động khoảng 200 người dân địa phương tại các xã xung quanh là Thanh La, Trung Yên, Tân Trào, Tú Trạc và một đơn vị bộ đội. Ban đầu mọi người dự định phải mất khoảng một tuần thì công việc mới hoàn tất được, nhưng với tinh thần cố gắng hết mình, chỉ sau hai ngày phát dọn, san gạt, đầm, một sân bay dã chiến đã hình thành. Đây là sân bay đầu tiên do chính bàn tay và khối óc của chúng ta làm nên và cũng có thể coi đây là "Sân bay Quốc tế đầu tiên của Việt Nam" và là chứng nhân của quan trọng trong quá trình Bác Hồ và quân đội ta, quân đồng minh làm việc tại Minh Thanh.
