Amiang là một nhóm các chất khoáng silicate trong thiên nhiên, ở dạng sợi và chúng có khả năng chia nhỏ thành nhiều sợi mảnh hơn, đặc tính bền, dai, chống chịu lửa, chống chịu tốt với ăn mòn hóa học và cách nhiệt.
Amiang là chất gây ung thư loại một và chất thải anmiang là chất thải độc hại và nguy hiểm. Amiang gồm 2 nhóm: serpentine và amphiboles.Trong đó nhóm amphiboles là độc nhất và bị cấm sử dụng hoàn toàn nhóm này ở Việt Nam. Độc tính do bụi amiang gây ra bệnh bụi phổi amiang, một loại bệnh nguy hiểm trực tiếp tới tính mạng con người, gây ra nhiều biến chứng: ung thư phổi, rối loạn hệ thống tạo huyết, tâm phế mãn và suy hô hấp, bệnh lao, viêm phế quản và khí thủng, giản phế quản.
Do độc tính quá mạnh và sự ảnh hưởng xấu quá lớn nên việc cấm sử dụng amiang khá nghiêm ngặc, một số nước cấm tuyệt đối và ra nhiều luật để thi hành. Chúng ta cần biết rõ về amiang cũng như những hiểm họa do nó đem lại để tìm cách phòng chống bảo vệ bản thân, gia đình và xã hội thật tốt.
