Lạm phát cao trong năm 2011 do nhiều nguyên nhân gây ra chứ không phải chỉ do sự tăng giá của những nhu yếu phẩm.
Nguyên nhân thứ nhất: Nhà nước chủ trương phát triển kinh tế ở mức độ cao bằng mọi giá, đặc biệt bắt đầu từ nhiệm kỳ 5 năm vừa qua của Thủ Tướng Nguyễn Tấn Dũng. Mới đây Chính phủ đặt ra những chỉ tiêu phát triển không thực tế: 7 -7.5% mỗi năm trong 5 năm tới và 7 -8% trong 10 năm tới. Trong khi đó, kinh tế Việt Nam trải qua nạn lạm phát 11.75% vào năm 2010 cao hơn tất cả những nước láng giềng. Chính phủ gia tăng chương trình đầu tư công qua các Doanh nghiệp nhà nước (DNNN) và hậu quả là làm tăng mức cầu về tín dụng. Do đó có thể nói rằng lạm phát hiện nay phần lớn do sức cầu kéo.
Nguyên nhân thứ hai: do còn có vấn đề bội chi ngân sách tương đương với 8.9% và 5.9% của tổng sản phẩm nội địa (Gross Domestic Product – GDP) lần lượt trong hai năm 2009 và 2010. Cán cân thương mại thiếu hụt thường xuyên trong nhiều năm vừa qua. Mức thiếu hụt này tương đương với 8.9% và 10.2% của GDP trong 2009 và 2010. Những con số này chứng tỏ rằng chi tiêu của nhà nước cao hơn thu nhập và nhu cầu nhập khẩu cao hơn trị giá hàng xuất khẩu. Hai sự thiếu hụt này tạo áp lực trên giá cả bằng cả hai tác động cầu kéo và chi phí đẩy.
