Trước khi học chương trình giáo dục bậc cao, học sinh Mỹ có 12 năm học tiểu học và trung học, chương trình từ lớp một cho tới lớp mười hai. Khi sáu tuổi, học sinh Mỹ bắt đầu vào học tiểu học. Sau năm hoặc sáu năm tiểu học sẽ tiếp tục học lên trung học.
