ALM giúp cho các ngân hàng có thể theo dõi và đo lường rủi ro và đưa ra những thay đổi cũng như định hướng chiến lược nhầm giúp cho ngân hàng tránh được những rủi ro đó.
Ngoài ra thì hiện nay ngoài kiểm soát các hoạt động on balance sheet, do sự mở rộng thị trường của ngân hàng ra khỏi traditional business, ALM còn phải thay đổi phù hợp với cấu trúc của ngân hàng và xử lí thêm 1 số hoạt động off balance sheet khác nữa.
