Làng trẻ em Birla Hà Nội là công trình quà tặng của ngài Birla người Ấn Độ - Giáo sư tiến sĩ - Tổng giám đốc Tập đoàn Công nghiệp nhẹ Cimcô - Birla và gia đình tặng UBND Thành Phố Hà Nội khi ngài đi thăm và làm việc tại Việt Nam năm 1983.
Công trình được khởi công cây dựng năm 1985 và hoàn thành năm 1987 với cơ sở hạ tầng ban đầu bao gồm:
- Khu A là nơi làm việc của bộ máy quản lý của Làng trẻ và khu học nghề, sinh hoạt ngoại khoá của Làng trẻ sau giờ đi học tại trường.
- Nhà mẫu giáo N
- 02 nhà nuôi trẻ C1, C2 với quy mô nuôi 25 trẻ / nhà
Sau khi xây dựng xong công trình, gia đình Ngài Birla giao lại cho UBND Thành phố Hà Nội quản lý ( Ngài Birla bị bệnh hiểm nghèo đã qua đời khi công trình chưa xây dựng xong) và gia dình cùng tập đoàn Cimcô Birla không giúp đỡ gì thêm cho các cháu mồ côi của làng.
Ngày 15-8-1988 Làng trẻ đón 50 trẻ hoàn toàn mồ côi cả cha lẫn mẹ, phát triển bình thường ở độ tuổi đón vào 2 - 12 tuổi của Thành phố Hà Nội vào nuôi, nguồn kinh phí nuôi dưỡng do UNND Thành phố Hà Nội chịu trách nhiệm.
Đến năm 1992 bằng tình cảm và sự cố gắng của cán bộ, của các bà mẹ dù số cán bộ không tăng, trang bị cơ sở vật chất của 02 nhà nuôi trẻ như cũ, Làng đã nuôi lên 80 trẻ.
Năm 1996, Ban lãnh đạo của làng trẻ em Birla Hà Nội đã xây dựng Dự án xin xây dựng thê m1 nhà nuôi trẻ. Dự án đã được UBND Thành phố phê duyệt và cấp ngân sách của Nhà nước xây dựng trong năm 1998.
Số lượng trẻ mồ côi hiện nay được nuôi tại Làng trẻ ở 03 gia đình lớn (nhà C1, C2, C3) là 110 trẻ.
