Theo quy tắc mẫu của FIATA về dịch vụ giao nhận, dịch vụ giao nhận dược định nghĩa như bất kì loại dịch vụ nào lien quan đến vận chuyển, gom hang, luuw ho, bốc xếp, đóng gói hay phân phối hàng hóa cũng như các dịch vụ tư vấn hay có lien quan đến các dịch vụ trên, kể cả các vấn đề hải quan, tài chính, mua bảo hiểm, thanh toán, thu thập chứng từ lien quan đến hàng hóa.
Theo luật thương mại Việt Nam thì Giao nhận hang hóa là hành vi thương mịa, theo đó người làm dịch vụ giao nhận hàng hóa từ người gửi, tổ chức vận chuyển, lưu kho, lưu bãi, làm các thủ tục giấy tờ và các dịch vụ khác có lien quan để giao hang cho người nhận theo sự ủy thác của Đảng, người vận tải hoặc người giao nhận khác.
Nói một cách ngắn gọn,, giao nhân là tập hợp những nghiệp vụ, thủ tục có lien quan đếnquá trình vận tải nhằm thực hiện việc di chuyển hang hóa từ nơi gửi hang đến nơi nhận hang . Người giao nhận có thể làm các dịch vụ một cách trực tiếp hoặc thong qua đại lý và thuê dịch vụ của người thứ ba khác
