Tổ chức thương mai thế giới (WTO) được thành lập vào ngày 1 tháng 1 năm 1995 và có trụ sở tại Gevene, Thụy Sĩ. Nhiệm vụ của WTO là giám sát các hiệp định thương mại giữa các nước thành viên với nhau theo những quy tắc thương mại. Mục đích của WTO là giúp các nhà sản xuất hàng hóa và dịch vụ, xuất khẩu, nhập khẩu các sản phẩm kinh doanh của các doanh nghiệp. Các hiệp định của WTO được ký kết bởi đa phần các quốc gia thương mại trên thế giới và tạo ra những cơ sở pháp lý cho thương mại quốc tế. Những điều này sẽ ràng buộc chính phủ các nước giữ cho chính sách thương mại của họ trong một giới hạn đã thõa thuận. WTO sẽ giúp cho thương mại toàn cầu được tự do, thuận lợi và minh bạch cũng như hạn chế những tác động tiêu cực không mong muốn để phát triển thương mại. Tổ chức này kế thừa và phát triển các quy định và thực tiễn thực thi Hiệp định chung về Thương mại và Thuế quan - GATT 1947 và là kết quả trực tiếp của Vòng đàm phán Uruguay (bao trùm các lĩnh vực thương mại hàng hoá, dịch vụ, sở hữu trí tuệ và đầu tư). Tính đến năm 2014 thì WTO đã có đến 160 thành viên là các nước và vùng lãnh thổ. Việt Nam gia nhập WTO vào ngày 11 tháng 1 năm 2007.

Cơ cấu tổ chức của WTO

Cơ cấu tổ chức của WTO bao gồm:
Hội nghị Bộ trưởng: Bao gồm các Bộ trưởng thương mại – kinh tế đại diện cho tất cả các nước thành viên; Họp 2 năm 1 lần để quyết định các vấn đề quan trọng của WTO;
Đại hội đồng: Bao gồm đại diện tất cả các thành viên; thực hiện chức năng của Hội nghị Bộ trưởng trong khoảng giữa hai kỳ hội nghị của cơ quan này; Đại hội đồng cũng đóng vai trò là Cơ quan giải quyết tranh chấp (DSB) và Cơ quan rà soát các chính sách thương mại;
Các Hội đồng Thương mại Hàng hoá, Thương mại dịch vụ, Các vấn đề Sở hữu trí tuệ liên quan đến Thương mại; Các Uỷ ban, Nhóm công tác: Là các cơ quan được thành lập để hỗ trợ hoạt động của Đại hội đồng trong từng lĩnh vực; tất cả các thành viên WTO đều có thể cử đại diện tham gia các cơ quan này;
Ngoài ra, Ban Thư ký: Ban Thư ký bao gồm Tổng Giám đốc WTO, 03 Phó Tổng Giám đốc và các Vụ, Ban giúp việc với khoảng 500 nhân viên, làm việc độc lập không phụ thuộc vào bất kỳ chính phủ nào.
