Tình hình sản xuất thủy sản Việt Nam gặp nhiều khó khăn. Kinh tế thế giới chưa hồi phục, sản xuất cá tra gặp nhiều bất lợi, dịch bệnh trong nuôi tôm nước lợ vẫn tiếp tục xảy ra và chưa có biện pháp khắc phục triệt để, chi phí đầu vào cho sản xuất tăng, ảnh hưởng bất lợi của thời tiết đối với hoạt động khai thác, những đòi hỏi ngày càng khắt khe về chất lưởng sản phẩm của thị trường thế giới đã tác động mạnh đến kết quả sản xuất và xuất khẩu thủy sản trong năm 2012.
Sản lượng thuỷ sản sản xuẩt ước đạt 4337 nghìn tấn, tăng 5,6%, trong đó cá đạt 3226 nghìn tấn, tăng 5,2%; tôm đạt 509 nghìn tấn, tăng 4,4%.
-Nuôi trồng thuỷ sản
Diện tích nuôi trồng thủy sản năm 2012 ước tính đạt 1059 nghìn ha, tăng 0,7% so vớinăm 2011, trong đó diện tích nuôi cá tra là 11,5 nghìn ha, tăng 3,4%; diện tích nuôi tôm sú 599,2 nghìn ha, giảm 1,4%; diện tích tôm thẻ chân trắng 34,3 nghìn ha, tăng 17,2%.
Sản xuất cá tra 9 tháng đầu năm diễn biến phức tạp: Trong 3 tháng đầu năm, tình hình tiêu thụ cá tra tương đối tốt, giá cá tra ở mức khá cao. Nhưng từ trung tuần tháng 3 trở lại, giá cá tra giảm, trong khi giá cả các yếu tố đầu vào như: thuốc, thức ăn, nhiên liệu v.v... tăng. Tuy nhiên, sản lượng cá tra cả nước vẫn tăng so với cùng kỳ, ước đạt 865 ngàn tấn, tăng 4,2%. Nguyên nhân chủ yếu do ở nhiều địa phương người nuôi mở rộng diện tích nuôi từ đầu năm khi giá cá đang ở mức cao.
Sản lượng tôm nuôi 9 tháng ước chỉ tăng 4,5% - thấp hơn rất nhiều so với mức tăng của 6 tháng đầu năm (7,8%).
-Khai thác thủy sản
