Người học tránh nói về những vấn đề mà họ không đủ lượng từ và cấu trúc của ngôn ngữ đích. Hiện tượng này tạo nên “lỗi tránh nói” mà ta thường thấy là người học lặp lại khá nhiều một lối nói trong khi cần phải dùng nhiều lối nói khác nhau.
Người học bắt đầu nói về một vấn đề nào đó nhưng không đủ năng lực ngôn ngữ nên bỏ lửng giữa chừng.
Những lỗi nảy sinh do chiến lược giao tiếp thường được coi là gắn với những “lỗi” thể hiện (performance error). Sự xuất hiện của những lỗi này thường do những nhu cầu giao tiếp tức thời, trong khi đó, năng lực về ngôn ngữ đích còn hạn chế.
