Về các công cụ giao tiếp xã hội không phải là ngôn ngữ: Loài người đã tiến hành giao tiếp bằng nhiều loại công cụ. Nhưng những công cụ này dù có những ưu điểm mà ngôn ngữ không có nhưng lại có nhiều hạn chế và không thể quan trọng bằng ngôn ngữ.

Cử chỉ, nét mặt, dáng điệu là những phương tiện giao tiếp quan trọng. Nhưng so với ngôn ngữ, chúng thật nghèo nàn và hạn chế. Không một cử chỉ nét mặt nào có thể diễn đạt một nội dung chẳng hạn Thế nào là giao tiếp bằng ngôn ngữ? Hơn nữa nhiều cử chỉ có ý nghĩa không rõ ràng, chính xác. Người tạo cử chỉ nghĩ một đằng, người tiếp thu nó hiểu một cách khác.

Chúng chỉ được dùng trong những phạm vi hạn chế nên chỉ có thể là phương tiện giao tiếp bổ sung quan trọng bên cạnh phương tiện ngôn ngữ là cái được dùng chung trong phạm vi toàn xã hội.
