Một khu vực hội nhập hoàn toàn vào nền kinh tế thế giới, nhằm giúp ASEAN có thể cạnh tranh thành công trên thị trường toàn cầu, đạt được mục đích sản xuất, trở thành nơi cung ứng quan trọng cho thị trường quốc tế, đồng thời bảo đảm thị trường ASEAN có sức hấp dẫn với các nhà đầu tư nước ngoài. Các quốc gia thành viên ASEAN cũng nhất trí tham gia nhiều hơn nữa vào mạng lưới cung ứng toàn cầu bằng việc nâng cao năng suất và hiệu quả. AEC sẽ trở thành tâm điểm của ASEAN với vai trò chủ động tham gia cùng các đối tác thương mại tự do của ASEAN và đối tác kinh tế bên ngoài trong việc đổi mới cấu trúc khu vực.
