Chủ thể tham gia vào hoạt động TTQT ở các quốc gia khác nhau. Mỗi giao dịch TTQT liên quan tới tối thiểu hai quốc gia, thông thường là ba quốc gia.
Hoạt động Thanh toán quốc tế liên quan đến hệ thống luật pháp của các quốc gia khác nhau, có thể đối nghịch nhau. Do tính phức tạp các bên tham gia thường lựa chọn các quy phạm pháp luật mang tính thống nhất, theo thông lệ quốc tế… Đồng tiền dùng trong thanh toán quốc tế thông thường tồn tại dưới hình thức các phương tiện thanh toán (Hối phiếu, Séc, Thẻ, Chuyển khoản…), có thể là đồng tiền của nước người mua hoặc người bán, hoặc có thể là đồng tiền của nước thứ ba, nhưng thường là ngoại tệ được tự do chuyển đổi.
Ngôn ngữ sử dụng trong TTQT phổ biến là tiếng Anh.
