Tuy nhiên, công nghệ trong nước chưa hoàn thiện và đồng bộ. Công nghệ, thiết bị nhập ngoại đang áp dụng tại một số tỉnh, thành phố không phù hợp với đặc điểm của Việt Nam là rác chưa được phân loại tại nguồn. Do vậy, tỷ lệ chất thải sinh hoạt tại các đô thị được xử lý, tái chế chỉ đạt khoảng 15%.
