Theo quy định của Uỷ ban Quốc tế về biển, tên của các biển rìa thường dựa vào địa danh của lục địa lớn gần nhất hoặc mang tên của một nhà khoa học phát hiện ra chúng. Biển Đông nằm ở phía Nam đại lục Trung Hoa nên có tên gọi là biển Nam Trung Hoa. Tuy nhiên, địa danh biển không có ý nghĩa về mặt chủ quyền như một số người ngộ nhận.
